Scope:
The Annie W. Read collection consists of manuscripts, photographs, printed material, and professional material.

Manuscripts in the collection include:  notes taken at lectures at McLean Hospital (referred to by Read as McLean Asylum) (ca. 1885-1886); papers based on several lectures at Boston Training School, with examiners' comments (1890); carbon typed copies of some of the lectures made for exhibition at The Chicago World's Fair: A Century of Progress (1933-1934); and other items.

Photographs in the collection include a negative made from an original print of Dr. Cowles, Dr. Babcock, Dr. Tuttle, and Miss Lucia E. Woodward, Superintendent of Nurses and Matron; and a photograph of A.A. Stevens in a student nurse uniform of the late 1880s.

Printed material includes a number of newspaper clippings pertaining to McLean Asylum, later McLean Hospital, dating from ca. 1892 to 1948.  Also present are: A Department of the Massachusetts General Hospital (1938); The McLean Newsletter - April 1941; Alumni News (ca. 1942); and McLean Hospital Calendar of Information. Books in the collection used by Annie W. Hurlbutt Read include Pronouncing Medical Lexicon, by Cleveland; and Pocket Therapeutics and Dose Book, by J.H. Vail (1886).  Other publications about the hospital include The New McLean Hospital, by Henry M. Hurd, M.D., reprinted from the American Journal of Insanity (1896); The McLean Hospital, 1811-1914, by George T. Tuttle, J.D., reprinted from The Institutional Care of the Insane in the United States and Canada, Vol. II (undated); and the One Hundred and Twenty-First Annual Report of the McLean Hospital.
 
Professional material includes: annual reports of the McLean Hospital Training School for Nurses (1901-1930, not inclusive); and announcements of the McLean Hospital School of Nursing (1938 and 1940).
