Barnes, Gene (1926-1997)

The Gene Barnes collection includes photographs, film reels, printed material, personal memorabilia, and audio recordings.

The bulk of the material in the collection has to do with Barnes’s research regarding Howard Hughes. Included in this group of material: fifteen reels of film titled “Zebra Original,” footage of Hughes' facilities not open to the public; several files of research material on Hughes and his various companies, including interviews; several printed publications with information regarding Hughes, dating from the late 1960s; and eight reel-to-reel audio tapes titled “Project Zebra.”

Photographs in the collection consist of a large binder titled “Reflections of a Photojournalist.” This is one-third of a projected work (unfinished at Barnes’s death); present are 41 portraits and 19 subjects, all black and white prints with typed captions. The binder dates from 1988.

Also present is a photograph (black and white print) of Barnes accepting an award from the Radio and TV News Club of Southern California for KRC Best TV Newsfilm Coverage (1957-1958).

Personal memorabilia in the collection include four awards (statuettes) from the Radio and TV News Club of Southern California (1957-1961); five awards from the National Press Photographic Association (1958-1963); and a certificate from Who’s Who in the World (1991-1992).

Other material in the collection includes two film reels, titled “NASA Newsreel” and “C.T.B.S.”; four reel-to-reel audio tapes; and an issue of Shutterbug magazine (June 1994).
