The Robert Baden-Powell collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, printed materials, photographs, and other objects related primarily to the Scouting movement.
Correspondence dates from 1870 to 1976 and includes both personal and professional letters. The collection contains around four hundred letters to or from Baden-Powell and six hundred and fifty letters to or from Baden-Powell’s wife, Olave Baden-Powell. Other key correspondents include Peter Keary, Daniel Carter Beard, Paul C. Richards, Richard Eggar, Eileen Wade, George S. Childs, Arthur Poyser, Carl Bernhardt, and Cyril Clemons.
Manuscripts in the collection date from 1904 to 1961 and include speeches and writing by Baden-Powell as well as a comprehensive list of Baden-Powell’s publications and military career accomplishments.
Printed materials in the collection date from 1919 to 1970 and include Scout merit badge series and songbooks, as well as Scout Association application and registration forms. Also included are advertisements, essays, and newspaper clippings about Baden-Powell and the Scouting movement.
Photographs in the collection date from 1890 to 1962 and chiefly feature Baden-Powell, Olave Baden-Powell, or other important figures in Scouting.
Other objects in the collection include scrapbooks and albums created by various individuals associated with Scouting and a compilation of photocopies amassed by Paul C. Richards pertaining to various correspondence found throughout the collection.
