The Lester Atwell collection includes manuscripts, printed material and correspondence.
Manuscripts by Atwell in the collection include his novel Love is Just Around the Corner (Simon and Schuster, 1963) as well as several short stories and non-fiction pieces (ca. 1948-1967).
Printed material in the collection includes the published magazine versions of several stories by Atwell; magazines include Collier's, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, and The Saturday Evening Post (1938-1953). Other printed items include reviews and publicity regarding Atwell's books Private (1958) and Love is Just Around the Corner (1963), as well as the musical comedy version of Love..., titled Flora, the Red Menace (1963-1965). Printed items regarding Liza Minelli and Harold Prince are present, as well as two programs.
Correspondence in the collection consists of professional, personal, and fan letters dating from 1938 to 1981. Notable correspondents include George Abbott, Frank Brookhouser, Eric Bush, George Frazier, John K. Hutchens, Walt Kelly, Harold Prince, and Louis Simpson. Included with the correspondence are various contracts, box office statements, royalty statements, and some notes from Atwell explaining the contents or significance of the correspondence.
