The Louis Begley collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, professional material, research material, video, audio, and other items.
Manuscripts by Begley in the collection include his novels Wartime Lies (1991); In Jouve’s Desert (unpublished, 1991-1995); The Man Who Was Late (1993); As Max Saw It (1994); About Schmidt (1996); Mistler’s Exit (1998); Schmidt Delivered (2000); Matters of Honor (2007); Franz Kafka: The Tremendous World I Have inside My Head (2007); and Killer, Come Hither (2007-2014), among others. Each novel is present in variant drafts, with galleys and translations into non-English languages. Other manuscripts by Begley include his introduction to an edition of Nabokov’s Speak, Memory (1995); “Unfinished Business,” Begley’s speech in the Belriner Lektion series (delivered in 1998); and “Dankrede,” Begley’s speech on the occasion of his receiving the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s Literaturpreis (2000). Also included in the series are Begley’s speeches from 2002 to 2003 and essays from The New Yorker (1995-2006).
Correspondence in the collection includes numerous professional letters to and from Begley regarding his novels (ca. 1992-2000) and three lectures at the University of Heidelburg (2006). The series also includes correspondence regarding the Century Association (2001-2005).
Printed material in the collection includes Begley’s short piece “A Man Without Luck,” published in The New York Times Book Review (1995), and his essay “Kafka: The Axe for the Frozen Sea Inside Us,” published in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, vol. 141 (delivered as a speech in 1995, published in 1997). Other printed material includes several reviews of Begley’s novels (in English and German), news clippings, journals, various pamphlets, and other miscellaneous items.
Professional material in the collection includes files regarding: the Century Members’ Dinner (2003) and Monthly Dinner (2004); the Salander-O’Reilly Show (2003-2004); and Bacon’s Trustee/Advocate files from 2004 to 2009, among other items. This series also includes press materials regarding Matters of Honor.
Research material in the collection includes a file on Alfred Dreyfus (2006-2009) and a file on the 2008 election.
Video cassettes in the collection consist of several recordings of Begley’s appearances on television, primarily for interviews. These include appearances on American, British, and German television (ca. 1989-2000).
Audio material in the collection includes Begley’s appearances on radio programs (American, British and German) as well as recordings of his speeches. This material dates from ca. 1992 to 2002.
