The Charles G. Bell collection consists of manuscripts and other material.

Manuscripts by Bell in the collection include poetry, articles, novels, and short stories. The drafts for these works include typed and carbon copies (some with handwritten corrections), mimeographs, and some photocopied versions of draft sections. Items include Delta Return (poetry, University of Indiana Press, 1956); ten poems published in The Quarterly Review of Literature (Princeton, 1972); drafts of the poems "Determined Cognizance" (1975) and "Five Fives"; photocopy of the typed draft for the poem Five Chambered Heart; the essays "Blake: Word and Image" (Mar. 1972) and "Shakespeare: The Phoenix and the Turtle"; the stories "The Tale of Mr. Bigtail," "The Fall of Candida" (published in New World Writing) and "The Open Door" (published in Texas Quarterly, 1962); several unpublished items; a synopsis for an autobiographical novel; four scholarly articles on poetry and the arts, including some published pieces (late 1960s and early 1970s); and Symbolic History: A Multimedia Study of the Western Arts, an unpublished book-length work written for a course at St. John’s College (1974-1975).

Other material in the collection includes some of Bell's course materials for his work at St. John's College, Santa Fe (1972-1973), including syllabi, outlines, and poetry translations. Also present is Bell's diary of a 1972 trip into a jungle.
