Bond, Michael (1926-2017)

The Michael Bond collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, professional material, and memorabilia.

Bond's manuscripts are mostly comprised of writings for and about his Paddington Bear series of children's books. There are also multiple manuscripts from his other series -- Monsieur Pamplemousse, Herbs, J. D. Polson, and Olga Da Polga. Bond's writings also include well over one hundred short stories and essays and some fragments of novels dating back to the 1940s.

Manuscripts for books from the Paddington Bear series include: A Bear Called Paddington (1958, 1960); More about Paddington (1959, 1962); Paddington Helps Out (1960, 1961); Paddington Abroad (1961, 1972); Paddington at Large (1962, 1963); Paddington Marches On (1964, 1965); Paddington at Work (1966, 1967); Paddington at the Circus (1973, 1974); Paddington Goes to School (1974); Paddington Hits Out (1977); Paddington in the Kitchen (1977); Paddington Takes the Test (1979, 1980); Paddington at the Zoo (1984, 1985); Paddington at the Fair (1985, 1986); Paddington at the Palace (1986); Paddington Minds the House (1986); Paddington's ABC (1990); Paddington's 123 (1990); Paddington's Opposites (1990); Paddington's Jar of Jokes (1992); Paddington Breaks the Peace (1992); Paddington's Disappearing Trick (1993); Paddington Meets the Queen (1993); Paddington Rides On! (1993); Paddington and the Tutti Frutti Rainbow (1998); Paddington Bear All Day (1998); Paddington Bear and the Busy Bee Carnival (1998); Paddington Goes to Market (1999); Paddington Goes to Hospital, written with Kara Jankel (2001); Paddington Bear in the Garden (2001); Paddington Here and Now (2001); Paddington's Grand Tour (2003); Paddington: My Book of Marmalade (2007); Paddington Races Ahead (2011-2012); and Paddington’s Cookery Book (2011), among other titles. Also present are over two hundred teleplays for the Paddington Bear animated television series, dating from 1996 to 1999. These drafts often contain comments by Bond, and include correspondence between Bond and Thomas La Pierre.

Manuscripts for books from the M. Pamplemousse series include: Monsieur Pamplemousse (1983); Monsieur Pamplemousse on the Spot (1986); Monsieur Pamplemousse Takes the Cure (1987); Monsieur Pamplemousse Aloft (1989); Monsieur Pamplemousse Investigates (1990); Monsieur Pamplemousse on Location (1992); Monsieur Pamplemousse Takes the Train (1993); Monsieur Pamplemousse Afloat (1998); Monsieur Pamplemousse on Probation (2000); Monsieur Pamplemousse on Vacation (2002); Monsieur Pamplemousse Hits the Headlines (2003); and a draft of Monsieur Pamplemousse and the French Solution (2006), among other titles.

Manuscripts for books from the Olga da Polga series: Tales of Olga da Polga (1971); Olga Meets Her Match (1973); Olga Makes a Friend (1975); Olga Carries On (1976); and Olga Takes Charge (1982).

Also present is the manuscript for Bond's autobiography, Bears and Forebears: A Life So Far (1996).

Correspondence in the collection includes many files of letters between Bond and his publishers. Professional correspondence includes letters from Harper-Collins Books, Hanna-Barbera Publishing, Collins Publishers, Hodder and Stoughton Publishing, Random House, and others. There are also general business letters, items regarding the "Paddington's Action Club" newsletter, and a number of files of letters related to the Paddington Bear television series. The latter items date from 1991 to 1996, and include several pages and notes from the development and production of the Paddington television series. Personal correspondence in the collection includes letters from friends and acquaintances, invitations, cards, and fan mail.

Printed material in the collection regarding Paddington includes newspaper articles (2007-2008); printed internet material; a 50-page file, which includes illustrations; proofs and book jackets for Paddington; international posters; pamphlets; and page proofs for numerous books within the Paddington series. This series also includes a 300-page proof of The Classic Adventures of Paddington (2013).

Professional material in the collection includes a subject file on the Paddington series as a work in progress, along with contacts; press releases; royalty statements; and invoices (1998-2002).

Other items in the collection include memorabilia and ephemera, mostly related to Bond's books, especially the Paddington Bear series; these items include storyboards, character designs, and prop designs created for the Paddington television series. Also present are audio-book recordings of Bond's books (from the Paddington and Pamplemousse series); various Paddington Bear merchandise; artwork made by children and sent to Bond; photographs (mostly publicity items); bound pre-print versions of six Paddington books; and other material.
