The John Irsfeld collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed materials, professional materials, film and video, and other items.

The collection includes manuscripts for novels, short stories, poems, and other works.

Collected novel manuscripts include Bending, Working It Out, Private Good, The President's Book, George Grey, Pitorro, Starting at Zero, Rat's Alley, Bad Love, Little Kingdoms, The Arc of Conjecture, Backslider, Starting at Zero, Movie Queen, Samar, Reflecting, Even the Hungers Don't Fit, Life In Iceland, and Rock and Roll Never Forgets. Also present is a manuscript for Irsfeld's first (and unfinished) novel, August is the Real December.

Collected short story manuscripts include "The Palm at the End of the Mind," "Stop, Rewind, and Play," "The Horse Fountain," "Ambivalence hardy Fire," "Late at Night, In Love," "Old Photographs, Empty Rooms, Flecks in Time, Copper Stars," "Vernacular," "The Centipede and the Toad," "Exercising," and "Secrets."

Collected poem manuscripts include "Bach Upon Waking," "Sonnet," ‘Before a Date," "The Dramatic Emotion is Static," ‘Upon Hearing of His First Love, Later," "Lines Against the Dark," "It's the Spring She Says," "For the First Time," "If You Didn't Want Me To," "For a Place Called Beer," and "Death of Innocence."

Additional manuscript items are constituted by "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: A Short Review" (book review) and "Working in Las Vegas" (autobiographical essay).

Correspondence in the collection is largely professional, documenting Irsfeld's exchanges with various editors, magazines, and literary journals (1971-1982). Letters frequently address manuscript submissions and acceptance/rejection notices.

The collection's printed materials consist of reviews, flyers, promotional cards, pamphlets, clippings, notes, newspapers, printed stories, and more. Corrected galley proofs of Little Kingdoms are present, as well, as are issues of Halcyon and Las Vegan magazine (the latter of which published Irsfeld's columns).

Professional materials include press releases, invitations, event information, and more. Among a number of subject files, materials filed under "Dr. Robert Maxon," the former President of UNLV, are of particular interest, containing notes, memos, articles, correspondence, scholarship information, and more (1987-1989). Irsfeld's cover letter and resume are also included, as are his academic papers and materials regarding the National Endowment for the Humanities and various jobs.

Film and video materials consist of VHS tapes displaying titles such as "The Greenspun School" and "Runnin' Rebel Story."

Other items in the collection include road maps; a family photo; oversized posters; phone messages; financial reports; and juggling balls.
