Brand, Phoebe (1907-2004)
The Phoebe Brand collection consists of manuscripts, professional material, photographs, correspondence, printed material, and other items.

Manuscripts in the collection primarily consist of scripts for plays which Brand acted in.  These include Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, Shakepeare’s Cymbeline, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth, Beckett’s Endgame and Act Without Words, Chehkov’s The Sea Gull, and others.  Also present are various script fragments, notes, and miscellaneous items.

Professional material in the collection includes cast lists, contact sheets, address books, daily planners (dated 1924, 1994, 2000, and 2000-2004), subject files, class syllabi, and other items.  Prominent subjects include the Hedgerow Theatre, the blacklist, Morris Carnovsky (Brand’s husband), acting, and various theatrical productions.

Photographs in the collection are extensive, consisting of hundreds of prints and several negatives of Brand.  These include several photos of Brand performing, as well as portraits of Brand and personal photos.

Correspondence in the collection consists of hundreds of several letters to and from Brand and others.  They include personal and professional correspondence, and date from the 1930s to the 2000s.

Printed material in the collection includes newspaper and magazine clippings, programs, booklets, brochures, fliers, and other items.  These date from the 1930s to the 1990s.

Other items in the collection include legal material, including correspondence regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation as well as contracts regarding Morris Carnovsky and the American Players Theatre; financial material; a video cassette of the twentieth anniversary celebration of the Theatre Artists Workshop; various awards; and other material.
