Cushing, Richard Cardinal (1895-1970)

The Richard Cardinal Cushing collection primarily consists of correspondence from Cushing to the Right Reverend Ralph Gallagher. Gallagher was the Executive Secretary of the Archbishop Cushing Charity Fund, later the pastor of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston, Massachusetts, and finally the pastor of St. Agatha’s in Milton, Massachusetts The letters are extensive, and date from 1946 to 1970. They are primarily concerned with fund-raising events, charitable endeavors, building projects, staff appointments, and finances. The collection also includes letters from Cushing to Rev. Eugene A. Carney, Rev. Francis Moran, Rev. Michael J. Ahearn, Rev. William H. Sherry, Walter A. Brown, Sister Honoria, Paul Bowser, Rev. Alderic Melanson, Dr. Roger J. Abicaid, Art Moger, Francis C. Leyden, Rev. John Broderick, Anna Coll McBrearty, John A. McPherson, and L. A. Caulfield.

Correspondence from others (primarily to Cushing or Gallagher) in the collection includes letters from wrestler Paul Bower, James M. Curley, Frank Fay, Rt. Rev. Charles A. Finn, Rev. William E. FitzGerald, Katherina P. Flanagan, Walter J. Furlong (Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Boston), Rev. Arthur J. Hagan, John Kemp, Francis C. Leyden, Joe Maguire, John A. McPherson, Brother Norbert (of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God), Daniel Rudsten (Mass. State Senator), Thomas M. Shelley, Rt. Rev. Cornelius Sherlock, Francis Cardinal Spellman, Rev. Richard H. Sullivan, Police Commissioner Thomas F. Sullivan, broadcaster W. Gordon Swan, and Boston College President Michael P. Walsh.

Other items in the collection include a photograph of Cushing with Gallagher and other clergy members (black and white print); a reproduction of a pastel portrait of Cushing, inscribed to Gallagher by Cushing; a plaque dedicated to Cushing by the Milton, Massachusetts B’nai Brith (1966); and publicity, financial records, and newspaper clippings regarding the Archbishop Cushing Fund (1946-1949, 1964).
