Dafoe, Willem (1955- )

The Willem Dafoe collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, professional material, printed material, photographs, artwork, and memorabilia.

Manuscripts in the collection consist of screenplays or teleplays for works in which Dafoe appeared.  Titles include Anamorph (2007) by Tom Phelan and Henry Miller; Inside Man (2006) by Russell Gewirtz, directed by Spike Lee; The Walker (2007) written and directed by Paul Schrader; XXX: State of the Union (2005) by Simon Kinberg; an excerpt from Faraway, So Close (1993) by Wim Wenders; Before It Had a Name (2005) written by Giada Colagrande and Willem Dafoe, in which they both starred; The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic (2011); and Whiskey Bay (2012).

The collection consists of both personal and professional correspondence.  Some notable correspondence includes letters, notes, and cards from such people as Wes Anderson, Twyla Tharp, Robert Redford, Paul Schrader, Oliver Stone, John Waters, Madonna, and the Royal Family of Thailand.

Professional material in the collection includes press kits from a variety of films Dafoe has been associated with, including The English Patient, Finding Nemo, The Last Temptation of Christ, Tom and Viv, Shadow of the Vampire, Wild at Heart, and others.  There are also files of clippings, a subject file about the Manchester International Festival (2010-2011), and other promotional material from several of Dafoe’s projects.

Printed material includes flyers, internet printouts, booklets, newspapers, magazine clippings, and pamphlets dating from 1980 to 2012.

The collection contains a number of photographs that range from head shots and portraits to event shots, premieres, and award ceremonies featuring Dafoe, as well as a shot of Dafoe for the cover of Esquire magazine (April 2012).  Also present are images of Dafoe with Harvey Keitel, Spike Lee, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese and others.  There are also personal photographs from Dafoe’s childhood, family, and friends, and a DVD of images from stage productions of A Moon for the Misbegotten and Phaedra, in which Dafoe appeared while attending the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.  

Artwork in the collection includes a few paintings by Dafoe, as well as photos of his art work.

Memorabilia consists of concert passes.
