Dietrich, Marlene (1901-1992)
Scope:

The Marlene Dietrich collection consists of material regarding her 1965-1968 tours in Australia and elsewhere. Included are correspondence, professional material, and photographs.

Letters from Dietrich in the collection include sixteen letters and three notes to Malcolm Cooke regarding accommodations, financial arrangements, interviews, performances, and scheduling (1965-1968); a letter to Charles Higham notifying him not to come to Australia due to Dietrich’s schedule (1968); a letter to Kenn Brodziak regarding the reshooting of a recorded performance (1968); and seventy-four notes to Malcolm Cooke and others regarding various requests, travel, financial issues, appearance arrangements, and other matters. Correspondence to Dietrich consists of items sent to her with her replies written on the original letters. These items include a note from Kenn Brodziak regarding a dinner date, with her affirmative response (1965); a letter from Bill Gordon regarding the rumored wish of Dietrich to view a television film in which  her daughter appears, with Dietrich’s response that she didn’t want to see it (1965); a letter from noted Australian artist Erica McGilchrist regarding showing Dietrich photographs of her artwork, with Dietrich’s positive response (1965); a telegram regarding the lighting plan for the Australian tour (1965); and a letter from C. J. Johnson proposing an interview with Radio Australia, with Dietrich’s refusal (1968).

Professional material in the collection consists of material regarding the lighting and audio sequences for Dietrich’s Australian tour of 1965; two documents detailing the needs, preparations, and instructions of Dietrich during her stay at a hotel (believed to be the Southern Cross Hotel); a camera script for a performance; and lighting cues for a performance (1968).

Photographs in the collection consist of black and white prints and negatives of Dietrich and her audience, taken during her 1965 Australian tour.

The collection also includes a cash receipt (1965).
