Downes, Edward (1911-2001)
The Edward Downes collection consists of professional material, correspondence, printed material, research material, manuscripts, audio recordings, and photographs.

Professional material in the collection includes: teaching material dating from the 1960s to the 1980s, including background files for lectures and seminars; items regarding Tristan Wagner; travel documents and information; address books and date books; and other items.

Correspondence includes general letters to and from various individuals, dating from 1939 to 2001.  Correspondents include Olga Koussevitzky, Zino Francescatti, H.C. Robbins Landon, Harold Schoenberg, Malcolm Sargent, and others.

Printed material in the collection includes a copy of Downes' book Guide to Symphonic Music; program notes for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1946-1950); photocopied microfilms of various scores and libretti; various articles (1959-1992); performance programs with handwritten notes (1964-1992); sheet music; and other material.

Research material includes information on various musical topics, including J.C. Bach, W.A. Mozart, the Juilliard School, and other subjects.

Manuscripts in the collection include drafts for Downes’ dissertation, J.C. Bach Opera Series 1950-80; a fugue written by Downes for his Ph.D.; and Working Autobiography of E.O.D. Downes (unpublished).

Audio recordings include open reels tapes regarding various operas and opera excerpt, lectures, and music criticism; and cassettes of performances of J.C. Bach.

Photographs in the collection include prints of artwork and architecture used as illustrations for Downes' Ph.D. thesis; and several microfilm reels of musical scores used as research by Downes.
