Published works include short fiction, book reviews written for Playboy, The New York Times, the Saturday Review of Literature, The Denver Quarterly, and Commonweal, and such longer works as Pillar of Salt (Scribner, 1959), The Successor (Scribner, 1961), Leah (Little, Brown, 1964), A Penny for Charity (Little, Brown, 1965), Caught in That Music (Viking, 1967), The Dream Museum (Viking, 1971), Looking for Fred Schmidt (Doubleday, 1973), and Love Affair  (Doubleday, 1978).

The collection also includes correspondence and printed materials.
