Gilliam, Terry (1940- )
Scope:
The Terry Gilliam Collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, professional material, film and video, audio, printed material, personal memorabilia, and other items. It is an extensive collection, covering Gilliam's entire career as an animator and movie director.

The archive contains a variety of materials assembled during the process of writing and directing most of Gilliam’s feature films to date. This includes scripts, both early treatments and numerous drafts, for his films since his first movie as a solo director, Jabberwocky. There are varying drafts for Jabberwocky (1977), Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1985), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), The Fisher King (1991), 12 Monkeys (1995), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Tideland (2005) and The Brothers Grimm (2005). This collection also contains some items of juvenilia and items relating to Gilliam’s work in the late 1960’s before he joined the famous comedy troupe “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”
 
Regarding Monty Python, the Gilliam archive contains very little material directly related to his work with the troupe. The collection contains several photos of the Pythons, memorabilia such as a card game, collector’s cards, a calendar, copies of some Python films on DVD and VHS format, and a Python-based computer game. One item of note is a script for the film The Life of Brian (1979). There are also some photographs taken in the process of scouting locations for Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), The Life of Brian and photos take during the making of the film Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983).

The collection includes correspondence regarding to the production of Gilliam's films (the amount varies with each production). These include short notes, memos, faxes and letters from actors and other collaborators, business partners, producers, executives and others, including Ian Holm, Katherine Helmond, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Tom Stoppard, Charles Alverson, John Goldstone, George Lucas, Gareth Wigan, Dawn Steel, Thomas Schüly, John Neville, Hunter S. Thompson, Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Roman Polanski. There are also a number of copies or drafts of letters written by Gilliam related to the production of his movies, post production- including editing, music, television editing, expenses, home video releases, restoration and more.

Other professional files and correspondence include items on production schedules; crew lists; budget materials; and reports on test screenings for Time Bandits, Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, and The Brothers Grimm. There are contract and legal materials on such topics as film distribution, merchandising, rights, screen credits and collaborators with TG, budgets and other agreements on various projects.

Production materials for the movies includes multiple photographs compiled during location scouting; notes and sketches by Gilliam and other artists for costume and character designs; and storyboards. There are a number of items like this pertaining to Brazil. Also present are blueprints for sets, specifically for Baron Munchausen; magazine clippings complied for research, including a file related to plastic surgery used for Brazil; posters and other artwork including some drafts by Gilliam and other artists used for designing artwork in the movies as well as publicity materials. There are conceptual drawings by others besides Gilliam for 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Brothers Grimm. The artwork by Gilliam includes design items such as a sketch of the Jabberwocky, and sketches and storyboards (most photocopies) for Time Bandits, Brazil, Baron Munchausen, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Brothers Grimm.

The collection contains a good amount of printed material. The bulk of this is magazines featuring articles about Gilliam, reviews of his movies, pamphlets and programs from festivals attended by Gilliam, promotional booklets for his films, clippings and photocopies of reviews of Gilliam’s work from both the United States and Europe, and as noted previously, posters and other advertisements for his movies.

The collection contains several boxes of media, primarily VHS tapes of daily rushes made during the filming of Tideland and The Brothers Grimm. There are also audition tapes, music samples and clip rolls of actors, recordings of television ads directed by Gilliam. There are also various media formats featuring trailers, footage, or recordings of nearly all of Gilliam’s feature films. Audio recording include cassette tapes and compact discs of music examined for possible film and soundtrack use, several large magnetic audio reels used in studio recording, magnetic mastering tapes. Finally, there are recordings of various television interviews and public appearances with Gilliam.

The collection contains a bit of juvenilia including photographs of Gilliam from birth and his late teens. There are some family photographs as well as printed material pertaining to Gilliam’s early artistic ventures in high school and college. There is a small section of correspondence relating to his college years at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.

Also, the collection has a small section of correspondence which covers Gilliam’s professional life during the mid to late 1960’s, including his attempts to secure work in England. There is one note from illustrator/writer Harvey Kurtzman, a mentor to Gilliam, as well as several examples of Gilliam’s illustrations for humor and politics during the 1960’s; some of these items are photocopies only, others are printed booklets or other items.

The collection also contains a number of items written about Gilliam and his work. This includes academic pieces as well as books of interviews and chronicles of the making of his films.
