Harrison, Rex (1908-1990)
The Rex Harrison collection consists of personal papers (including diaries and manuscripts), manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, professional material, printed material, and other items.

Beginning with the personal material, the collection includes diaries kept by Harrison from 1977 to 1989, as well his personal notes on a variety of subjects and an interview transcript from 1986. The collection also includes autobiographical manuscript pages consisting of notes and draft pages from several different projects; these include Rex: An Autobiography; Comedy, Sir; A Damned Serious Business; A Murmur of Delight / Humor in Acting; and three untitled drafts.

Manuscripts in the collection are from films, plays and television programs in which Harrison acted. Some scripts bear notes made by Harrison. Theater scripts in the collection date from 1947 to 1990, and include the following titles: Anne of the Thousand Days; Caesar and Cleopatra; My Fair Lady; Heartbreak House; The Circle; In Praise of Love; The Lionel Touch; and The Admirable Crichton. Plays in book format include Venus Observed; Away; Doctor Knock; Marvelous Party; Henry IV; A Life in the Theatre; and The Woods. Film scripts date from 1965 to 1977; titles include Ashanti; Doctor Dolittle; Volpone (The Honey Pot); La Puce a L’Oreille (A Flea in Her Ear); and Staircase. Teleplays date from 1971 to 1986; titles include Platonov; Don Quixote; Heartbreak House; and Anastasia. Also present are over one hundred scripts, some with notes, from projects in which Harrison did not appear.

The collection contains photographs. Most can be divided among the following subjects: personal photos of Harrison and his family (1914-1980s); publicity photos of Harrison (1965-1980s); theater photos (1947-1978), from Anne of the Thousand Days; My Fair Lady; The Kingfisher; Henry IV; and Caesar and Cleopatra; film photos (1940-1970s), from Night Train to Munich; Major Barbara; My Fair Lady; The Four Poster; Cleopatra; The Agony and the Ecstasy; Staircase; Doctor Dolittle; Shalimar; and The Happy Thieves; and television photos from Don Quixote, along with a book on the production of the telefilm.

Correspondence in the collection primarily consists of letters to Harrison dating from 1968 to 1990. Correspondents include Garson Kanin, Burgess Meredith, Arthur Schlesinger, Brendon Gill, Jule Styne, Peter Hall, David Frost, and Michael Birkett.

Professional material in the collection includes production materials from a revival of My Fair Lady; Henry IV; The Kingfisher; Anne of the Thousand Days; and Caesar and Cleopatra. These production materials include an assortment of notes, set designs, sketches, and cast lists.

Printed material in the collection primarily consist of magazine articles, clippings, and reviews regarding Harrison and his acting work. These date from 1956 to 1990, with most dating from the 1980s. Other printed items include fourteen play programs dating from 1926 to 1988; chronologies for plays, movies and television programs; some pages of sheet music bearing notes by Harrison; as well as some other printed material by or about Harrison.

Other items in the collection include some financial material, awards, address books, and condolence and publicity materials following Harrison's death.
