Howard, Mel (1925-1996)
The Mel Howard collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed materials, professional materials, financial materials, film and video, photographs, and miscellaneous items.

Collected manuscripts consist primarily of screenplays and treatments by other filmmakers, including Don Ross, Kate Kaminski, Laurie Kahn-Leavitt, John Gianvito, Chuck Brady, Carol Lucia Satring, Yashijuro Ozu, and others. Howard's "New York Story" is included, as well.

Correspondence, collected between 1972 and 1996, is both personal and professional. Topics of note include post-graduate film courses and the Sundance Film Festival.

The collection's printed materials include news clippings, journals, and issues of The New Yorker, The Comment, Americana, Harper's, and DGA News. Isiah Baity's The Power of Love (Luv) and Ernest Pintoff's Bolt from the Blue (inscribed to Howard) are also present, as well as a New York Screenwriter newsletter, a Cole Porter portfolio, and "12 Bob Dylan Hits for Harmonica."

Howard's professional materials are documented in a series of subject files; file headings include "Budget," "Courses/Curriculum," "Renaldo and Clara," "Thesis Pitches," "Resumes," and more. Miscellaneous items -- such as proposals and excerpts, a "Bar Fly" production report, faculty bylaws for the Boston University's College of Communication, and interdepartmental correspondences -- constitute additional materials.

Financial materials concern budget proposals and contracts for various film ventures.

Film and video items, recorded on U-Matic videocassettes, include two copies of "Snapshots" and two untitled items.

Three color and six black and white photographs are present, as well.

Other items in the collection include calendar books; sheet music; a certificate from "Who's Who in Entertainment" (1992-93); a black and white photo of Cheers; and Howard's business cards from his tenure at Boston University's College of Communication.
