The Yale Joel collection includes correspondence, personal memorabilia, printed materials, professional materials, cameras and equipment, and photographs.

Correspondence in the collection consists of congratulatory letters, greeting cards, professional materials, and more. Notables include Whitey Ford, Robert F. Kennedy, Henry R. Luce, Ray Mackland, Robert M. Morgenthau, William Schneiderman, and Estes Kefauver.

Joel's honors and awards constitute much of the collection's personal memorabilia. Items include: "16th Annual ‘News Pictures of the Year' Photo Competition and Exhibition, First Prize"; "15th Annual ‘News Pictures of the Year' Photo Competition and Exhibition, Portrait and Personality Second Prize and Fashion and Society First Prize"; "24th Annual Competition, 1966 Pictures of the Year, First Place, Magazine Picture Story"; "New York Press Photographers Association Inc., First Prize"; "The Art Director's Club of Metropolitan Washington Certificate of Merit for Editorial Design"; and "The National Press Photographers Association 12th N.P.P.A. Encyclopedia Britannica, 1955 Feature, Second Prize," among others.

Also present in the collection are Joel's White House press pass; U.S. Navy photographer's identification card; and temporary residence card, rations card, and driver's permit (all from France), alongside a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Sheriff card.

Printed materials consist primarily of an extensive catalogue of Life magazine issues. Though Joel's collection dates from 1945 to 1987, issues are particularly well-collected between 1969 and 1971. Items of note include the special 1969 edition celebrating the Apollo 11 moon landing and "The Life Picture Collection" (2002). Additional publications include Smithsonian, People, Time, Signature, Photography, Look and Ameryka (Polish). Various clippings, pamphlets, tear sheets, and advertisements are present, as well.

The collection's professional materials include subject files containing matter pertaining to "Composition," "Reference Cards," and "Sports and Action". Other items include notes, business cards, indices, and equipment catalogues.

Among the most unique items in Joel's collection are his cameras and camera equipment. The selection includes cameras from a number of manufacturers: Canon, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Polaroid, Contax, and more. Film packs, light meters, flash exposures, and lens hoods and filters constitute additional items.

Photographs in the collection chronicle Joel's prolific, decades-long effort to engage with countless subjects and styles. Prints (black and white and color), contact sheets, and negatives are organized according to categories such as theatre and television, celebrity, fashion, sports, politics, experimental techniques, landscapes, animals, advertisements, portraits, Americana, and more.
