Hadley Luce, Leila (1925-2009)

The Leila Hadley Luce collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, research material, photographs, diaries and journals, and memorabilia.

Manuscripts include drafts of Hadley Luce’s books, including Give Me the World (1958), A Journey with Elsa Cloud (1997), and A Garden by the Sea (2005), among other materials.

Correspondence includes personal letters ranging from 1950 to 1998, with notable correspondents including Charles Addams, Cleveland Amory, Ed Arno, Steven M. L. Aronson, Brooke Astor, Prudence Crowther, Nadine Gordimer, S. J. Perelman, and Martin Stone.

Printed material includes articles by Hadley, published in Quest, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. Also present are magazines, including copies of a 1993 issue of Town and Country, a 1997 issue of Quest, and a 1997 issue of Publisher’s Weekly. Book reviews and news clippings about Hadley Luce from 1993 to 1999, as well as book covers for A Journey with Elsa Cloud are also included, among other materials.

Research material consists of notes on A Journey with Elsa Cloud, regarding such subjects as weddings and dance in India.

Photographs consist of black and white and color prints of S. J. Perelman, photographs of family, and various photo albums.

Diaries and journals consist of travel notebooks regarding A Journey with Elsa Cloud.

Memorabilia includes a sewing kit, matchbook, a snow globe with Hadley Luce’s picture, a Christmas tree angel designed by Hadley Luce, and a 2002 diploma from an honorary degree from Mount Saint Mary College, among other materials.
