McCabe, Robert Karr (1929-2016)
Scope:

The Robert Karr McCabe collection consists of manuscripts, notebooks, professional material, photographs, personal memorabilia, scrapbooks, and other material. 
 
Manuscripts by McCabe in the collection include drafts of his book Storm over Asia (New American Library, 1967). Also present are various articles regarding Southeast Asia, as well as short stories. Also included are notes and drafts for The International Herald Tribune Guide to Business Travel in Asia (Passport Books, 1988) by McCabe. The latter also includes several files of research material (notes, letters, maps, data, etc.) regarding various Southeast Asian nations. The collection also includes some material regarding an unpublished book McCabe was to have ghost-written for Jirina Mlynkova.

Professional material in the collection primarily consists of files containing various documents and items, arranged by topic by McCabe. All together, these files contain manuscripts, correspondence, printed items, memorabilia, and photographs. Included are files on Storm over Asia; Newsweek (1961-1965); Laos and Cambodia; North and South Vietnam; the Vietnam conflict; journalism by McCabe; China; Asian refugees; Burma; Thailand; Malaysia; Singapore; Korea; Czechoslovakia; and other subjects.

Photographs in the collection mostly consist of photos taken in Vietnam and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, dating from about 1962 to 1966. The photos show various military personnel, protests by Buddhist monks, refugees in Hong Kong, photos from Laos, and other images. Also present are some photographs from Moscow (1966); a publicity photo of McCabe from Japan Air Lines; and photographs from China (1985).

Personal memorabilia in the collection includes six press cards and other identification cards.

There are several small, spiral-bound notebooks in the collection, dating from 1961 to 1968. They are identified by the time and place in which they were written. Topics include Vietnam, Indonesia, refugees, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, New York City, Moscow, Africa, Europe, Washington, D.C., the Middle East, and Norway. 

Scrapbooks in the collection include an album of clippings from the Washington Post (1962-1963) and other sources, by McCabe.

Other material in the collection includes some correspondence; receipts; flight itineraries; published versions of McCabe’s articles from the 1980s; and a full run of McCabe’s biannual literary publication/newsletter Daybook, with 11 volumes dating from Fall 2003 to Spring 2014.
