Morton, Charles (1899-1967)
Scope:
The Charles W. Morton collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, personal memorabilia, printed materials, legal materials, financial materials, photographs, artwork, journals and diaries, scrapbooks, and other materials.

Manuscripts in the collection include his book A Slight Sense of Outrage (1955); various short pieces; and material from his work at the Atlantic Monthly magazine, consisting of his "Accent on Living" articles.

Correspondence in the collection is extensive and includes both personal and professional material dated from 1929 to 1967. Notable correspondents include Morton's wife Mildred, Rene MacColl, Richard Tregaskis, and Osbert Sitwell.

Personal memorabilia in the collection includes items from Mildred Morton and Cynthia Morton, and other notebooks, address books, certificates, diplomas, yearbooks, and vacation scrapbooks.

Printed materials in the collection include magazines, newspapers and clippings dated from the 1940s to the 1960s, miscellaneous booklets, menus, programs, manuals, calendars, and pamphlets, Mildred Morton's journals dated between 1927 and 1935, book reviews, and notes used for Morton's columns.

Legal materials in the collection consist of Morton family documents dated between 1860 and 1967, some material is undated.

Financial materials in the collection include many documents pertaining to Mildred Morton-Sylvester, Ben Sylvester, Samuel Wadleigh, and Cynthia Morton, as well as tax material, and rental apartment material.

Photographs in the collection include snapshots of Morton, Mildred Morton, Cynthia Morton, Morton family photographs dated from 1900 to the 1950s, photo albums of Mildred Morton's father's family from the 1890s, professional photos of Morton with his Atlantic Monthly associates from the 1950's, and many other personal photographs and miscellaneous snapshots.

Artwork in the collection includes a small painting by Mildred Morton (1908).

Journals and diaries in the collection include those of Samuel Wadleigh dated between 1875 and 1895, those of Mabel Wadleigh dated between 1889 and 1902, and those of Mildred Morton from 1908. Also included are travel books and journals from the 1950s.

Scrapbooks in the collection include Cynthia Morton documents, Mildred Morton scrapbooks, and various clippings, programs, and pamphlets dated between the 1930's and 1940's.

Other materials in the collection include Cynthia Morton's school binder and notebook (1948), assorted Ben Sylvester material, appointment books, an ink stamp for Morton's signature, and various large-sized, framed photos, sketches, and portraits.
