The Charles J.V. Murphy collection consists of correspondence, professional material, diaries and journals, photographs, and other material.
Correspondence in the collection dates from 1915 to 1987, and includes personal and professional letters. Much of the correspondence has been arranged into subjects and chronological files. Prominent subjects include Richard E. Byrd’s Antarctic expedition of 1933-1935; the Central Intelligence Agency; Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor; and articles for various periodicals. Notable correspondents include Joseph Alsop, Lord Beaverbrook, Ben Bradlee, McGeorge Bundy, Richard E. Byrd, Cass Canfield, Clark Clifford, Everett Dirksen, Allen Dulles, Gerald Ford, John Kenneth Galbraith, Katherine Graham, Hardie Gramatky, Richard Helms, John F. Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, Arthur Krock, Edward Lansdale, Henry Luce, Douglas MacArthur, John McCone, John A. Mellin, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Brent Scowcroft, H. Struve Hensel, Edward Teller, Frank Wisner, and many others.
Professional material includes subject files arranged into various topics by Murphy. Topics include research material on various topics; trips to various locations throughout the world; Edward VIII; the Central Intelligence Agency, including interviews with various employees at the Agency; the “Zamzam” incident of 1941; and several other subjects. There is a great deal of material regarding James V. Forrestal, including research files, correspondence (mainly with Michael Forrestal), interview transcripts and notes, and printed items. This latter material was used as research for the book Driven Patriot (U.S. Naval Institute Press, 1992), which was begun by Murphy and his daughter, Edie Holbrook, and finished by Townsend Hoopes.
Diaries and journals in the collection include Murphy’s personal diary dated 1935-1939; professional diaries dating from 1951 to 1987; and daily appointment diaries from 1949 and 1987. Journals include Murphy’s daily journal from 1967
Photographs in the collection primarily consist of family photos and photos of Murphy. There are several photos of Murphy’s children.
Other material in the collection includes manuscripts, financial material, legal material, and printed material. The latter includes two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and several reprints of comic strips, including strips Buster Brown, by Richard F. Outcault, The Katzenjammer Kids, by Rudolf Dirks, and Foxy Grandpa, by Charles E. Schultze.
