Newcomb, Richard (1913-2004)
Scope:
The Richard Newcomb collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, personal memorabilia, printed materials, research materials, film and video, audio materials, and other materials.

Manuscripts in the collection include Newcomb’s books Abandon Ship! (1958), Savo: The Incredible Naval Debacle off Guadalcanal (1961), and Iwo Jima (1965). Also included are other works by both Newcomb and others, all untitled.

Correspondence in the collection includes various letters both to and from Newcomb dated between 1978 and 1999, some undated.

Personal memorabilia in the collection includes two knives, personal papers and brochures, and various tickets, receipts, handouts, envelopes, and postcards.

Printed materials in the collection include many articles by Newcomb, reviews of Newcomb’s books, materials about Newcomb, and various maps.

Research materials in the collection are extensive and focus on Abandon Ship!, Savo, and Iwo Jima. These materials include notes, lists, biographies, correspondence, photographs, and questionnaires.

Film and video in the collection consists of a Japanese film on Savo Island.

Audio materials in the collection include a recording on Iwo Jima from a 1965 radio broadcast, a 1965 radio interview of Newcomb and J.K.N McCaffery, and another radio interview of Newcomb titled “Viewpoint” also from 1965.

Other materials in the collection include two playbills and multiple copies of a photograph from 1953.
