Newman, Robert (1909-1988)
Scope:
The Robert Newman collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed materials, professional materials, legal materials, and other materials.

Manuscripts in the collection include drafts of Newman’s books and novels The Enchanter (1962);The Japanese People of Three Treasures (1964); Corbie (1966); The Boy Who Could Fly (1967); Grettir the Strong (1968); Merlin’s Mistake (1970); The Twelve Labors of Hercules (1972); Testing of Tertius (1973); The Shattered Stone (1975); Night Spell (1977); The Case of the Vanishing Corpse (1980); The Case of the Baker Street Irregular (1984); The Case of the Somerville Secret (1985); The Case of the Murdered Players (1985); and other of Newman’s later novels.

Other manuscripts in the collection include the plays "All Through the Night," "Ghost Town," and other plays,  an article titled "Myth and the Creative Process," over two hundred radio scripts for "City Hospital" dated between 1951 and 1958, as well as many other radio scripts, screenplays, teleplays, short stories, and nonfiction works.

Correspondence in the collection includes both personal and professional letters dated between 1931 and 1970. Notable correspondents include Shannon Ravenel, Jay Williams, Arnaud d’Usseau, Russell Cowles, and Russell Hoban.

Printed materials in the collection include proofs for The Case of the Baker Street Irregular, The Case of the Vanishing Corpse, The Case of the Somerville Secret, and other of Newman’s later novels; a Stonington Patriot newsletter from 1775, Holland’s magazine from 1937, and other materials.

Professional materials in the collection include a summary from a 1945 detective program meeting, and a confidential Radio Outpost Division report from 1943.

Legal materials in the collection include Newman’s contracts with the J. Walter Thompson Co. from 1937, an affidavit of support for Wolfgang Hirsh-Heinz from 1940, and a marketing contract for Newman’s play "Ghost Town."

Other materials in the collection include a 1946 story by Jay Williams titled, "The Christmas Story," pen and pencil drawings by Jay Williams, a list of the signs and symbols of the zodiac, and a Pennsylvania Railroad ticket from 1946.
