Scope:
The Edward Proffitt collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed materials, and professional materials.

Manuscripts in the collection include Proffitt’s books Reading and Writing about Short Fiction (1988), Reading and Writing about Literature (1990), Prose in Brief: Reading and Writing Essays (1991), A Writer’s Grammar (1991), The Organized Writer: A Brief Rhetoric (1992), Homo Erectus (2001), Coming Out Twice: The ‘50’s vs. the ‘90’s (2006), and others of Proffitt’s books. Also included are the instructor’s manuals for some of these books; essays by Proffitt, including “The Art of Finding: A Definition of Romanticism” and “Creation of Self”; drafts of Proffitt’s fiction works Passingwatergate, Camellot, and Marty Stones; Proffitt’s undergraduate essays from Cornell; an honors essay; works titled “The Structure of Experience: Explications of The Mature Poems of G.M. Hopkins” and “Poetry: An Introduction and Anthology”; many unpublished works by Proffitt; various poems, plays, short stories, and other works.

Correspondence in the collection includes professional material regarding Proffitt’s books, teaching, and literature, dated between 1962 and 1984, material from Proffitt’s publishers dated between 1984 and 1986, and rejection letters from 1986.

Printed material in the collection include many publications, such as Manhattan Quarterly from 1971 and Victorian Poetry from 1978, articles and a letter to the editor by Proffitt, proofs for Reading and Writing Essays, an issue of The Explicator from 1991 containing an essay on Yeats, newspapers and invitations from 2011, a catalog on pornography, and other materials.

Professional material in the collection include Proffitt’s teaching files, consisting of materials on Milton, writing, Byron, Shelley, Keats, and other miscellaneous class and teaching materials. Also included is a list of poem topics by Proffitt.
