The Alec Rackowe collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, and other items.
Manuscripts by Rackowe in the collection includes the novel All the Millionaires (Macmillan, 1967); a fragment of Rackowe’s first novel, A Stylish Marriage (Farrar, Straus, 1948); several novellas published in Redbook; several other short stories and novellas, published in various magazines; and scripts for several stage plays.
Correspondence in the collection includes several professional letters between Rackowe and his literary agents and editors, dating from 1960 to 1981. Some personal correspondence is also present.
Printed material in the collection includes many magazines with the published versions of Rackowe’s writings. Titles include Redbook, America, Collier’s, Woman, Chatelaine, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s, Good Housekeeping, and Star Weekly Novel. The copies of Collier’s include the June 28, 1941 issue, which includes Rackowe’s short story “The Four-Minute Mile.”
Other items in the collection include a scrapbook of reviews clipped from newspapers, also including the first part of the original manuscript for A Stylish Marriage; Rackowe’s daily diaries from 1961 to 1968; two bound notebooks; an audio recording of Rackowe’s appearance on the Nancy Craig radio program (1948), on four 78 rpm phonograph discs; photographs of Rackowe; and various documents and memorabilia regarding Rackowe’s military service in World War I.
