Reid, Charles (1900-1987)
Scope:
The Charles Reid collection includes various material regarding composers, conductors, instrumentalists, singers, pop musicians, and recording artists used by Reid in writing his music critiques. The collection includes material regarding Richard Adler, Malcolm Arnold, Daniel Barenboim, John Barbirolli, Thomas Beecham, Tony Bennett, Arthur Bliss, Karl Bohm, Maria Callas, Doris Day, Mirella Freni, Pierino Gamba, Tito Gobbi, Victoria de Los Angeles, Christa Ludwig, Andrezej Panufnik, Malcolm Sargent, Igor and Theodore Stravinsky, Joan Sutherland, Dickie Valentine, and William Walton among others. Additional material in the collection regarding Reid includes various personal memorabilia.

Material regarding Richard Adler includes typed interviews and a personal letter (1955). 

Material regarding Malcolm Arnold includes printed articles by Reid and typed interviews (1960).

Material regarding Daniel Barenboim includes printed articles, typed interviews, and printed scores. Scores included in the collection include "Songs of My 'Cello and Me'" (Iris Greep, 1953).

Material regarding John Barbirolli includes manuscripts, research material, printed material, photographs, and correspondence. Manuscripts include John Barbirolli, A Biography (1971). Research material includes binders and notebooks of biographic notes (1971). Printed articles by Reid include "Profile-John Barbirolli," The Observer (1947) and "The People Who Are the Hallè," News Chronicle (1957). Photographs included in the collection date between 1936 and 1969 and are mainly images of rehearsals and performances. Correspondence consists of professional letters dated 1972.

Research material includes a research index of various notebooks of biographical notes.  Printed articles by Reid include "Sir Thos. Beecham Washes His Hands of Leeds Festival," Yorkshire Observer (1934); "Notes from Abroad, "High Fidelity (1959) and "The Birth of Baton, "Punch (1959). Photographs in the collection consist of personal images of Beecham and family members from 1944. Correspondence consists of letters dating between 1927 and 1961.

Material regarding Arthur Bliss includes typescripts of interviews (1961), programs and mementos, and correspondence with Reid dating between 1945 and 1963.

Photographs of Sargent in the collection date between 1918 and 1966. Correspondence includes letters dated 1967.

Material regarding Joan Sutherland includes typed interviews, printed articles, and correspondence dating between 1960 and 1962.

Material regarding Dickie Valentine includes typed interviews.

Personal memorabilia in the collection includes a wedding invitation (1923), as well as an Admission Program to Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Stamford (1948).
