Schaeffer, Susan Fromberg (1941-2011)
Scope:
The Susan Fromberg Schaeffer collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, professional material, journals, personal memorabilia, and other material.

Manuscripts in the collection consist of novels, poetry, short stories, plays, articles, and other literary material. Novel manuscripts include Anya (1974); The Madness of A Seduced Woman (1984), with editorial notes and corrections; The Injured Party (1986); Buffalo Afternoon (1989); The Autobiography of Foudini M. Cat (1997); and various drafts and fragments of other works. Manuscripts of poetry include multiple drafts of numerous poems (1972-1983) including Schaeffer’s poetry collections Asylum, The Bible of the Beasts of the Little Field, and Rhymes and Ruins of the Toad: Poems and Stories. Manuscripts of short stories include The Cocoon, Diary of a Strange Year, Everything I Know About Her, The Family Cat, Haunted, Journals, and Madamoon among others. Plays include A Second Language (1994). Articles by Schaeffer include an extensive catalog of literary reviews as well as two dissertations titled Folding the Patterned Carpet: Form and Thesis in Novels of Vladimir Nabokov and The Internal Journey: A Study of Selected Novels.
 
Correspondence in the collection consists of personal and professional letters dating from 1846 to 2007. Personal correspondence includes many family letters dated1850-1910; hundreds of letters from Schaeffer to family (1991-1998); and personal letters addressed to Schaeffer from various acquaintances. Other letters include fan mail, faxes and emails (1986-2008).

Printed material consists of articles; book reviews; periodicals; general newsletters, booklets, flyers and book covers (2003-2005); proofs; and other various items.

Professional material consists of a book jacket for The Autobiography of Foudini M. Cat; Schaeffer’s published reviews (1979-1993); research material regarding Anya; various teaching materials and itineraries from Brooklyn College; and other items.

Journals, notebooks, and scrapbooks in the collection include a personal journal (1984); memo notebooks (1974-1975); notebooks of research material, outlines and notes with some poetry manuscripts (1975-1978);  scrapbooks of family photographs and mementos (1942-1950).

Personal memorabilia in the collection includes Schaeffer’s graduation gown; Masters of Arts and Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Chicago (1963 and 1966); various sketches; watercolors; and other items.  

Other material in the collection consists mainly of electronic media and audio recordings including floppy disks (1984-1989) and cassette recordings (1982-1989).
