Shepard, Elaine (1913-1998)
Scope:
The Elaine Shepard collection consists of manuscripts, printed materials, correspondences, and various personal memorabilia from the life of this actress, reporter and author.

Manuscripts in the collection include several drafts and revisions of the novels The Doom Pussy (1967), Lady Sun, and Forgive Us Our Press Passes (1962) along with some unpublished material.  In addition, the collection contains manuscript versions of interviews, articles, and speeches written by Shepard. Also present are several notebooks and files of miscellaneous manuscripts.

Correspondence in the collection includes personal and professional letters dating from 1939 to 1987.  Notable correspondents include Spiro and Judy Agnew, U.E. Baughman, Barry Goldwater, John and Barbra Eisenhower, James C. Hagerty, Mary Hemmingway, Frances G. Knight, Dewy E. Long, Donald Maitland, Otto F. Otepka, Patricia and Richard Nixon, Storm Thurmond, and Sam Yorty.

Professional material in the collection consists of various documents from the many trips Shepard took as a member of the press. These include trips to the USSR, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, where Shepard would conduct interviews and report on various world leaders including Eisenhower, Khrushchev, and Fidel Castro.

Printed material in the collection consists of pamphlets, articles and clippings relating to the Vietnam War and other research material, press releases, publicity material, newsletters, and publishers' proofs, along with some financial material. Also included in the collection are Shepard’s personal copies of magazines and newspapers dated 1940-1960.
 
The collection also contains personal memorabilia including press passes, awards, date books, Army gear, and several scrapbooks dating from 1920 to 1965.
