Stern, G.B. (1890-1973)
Scope:
The G.B. Stern collection includes manuscripts, printed material, correspondence, and other items.

Manuscripts in the collection are extensive and represent a wide range of genres and literary forms. Specific items range from articles, short stories, and essays, to plays, novels, speeches, and several notebooks filled with "doodles" (memos to herself, personal notes, fragments of writing, reflections on her own work, and some autobiographical material).  The collection also includes several novels and biographical manuscripts including Promise Not to Tell (1964), Stern's book on Robert Louis Stevenson; along with extensive notes, several screenplay drafts, and film treatments for various different stories, as well as a few unpublished stage plays.

Printed material in the collection consisst of published versions of short pieces by Stern, including reviews, short stories, essays,  articles published in numerous magazines and journals, publicity material, clippings, reviews of other authors' work, publishers' proofs, pamphlets, programs from professional functions, copies of television scripts, and several pieces of research material regarding Robert Louis Stevenson. The collection also contains several professional documents, miscellaneous clips by friends, and several other unidentified and miscellaneous pages.

Correspondence in the collection consists of professional and personal letters dating from 1925 to 1967. Correspondents include several well-known authors, actors, and publishers, as well as family and friends; notable correspondents include Monica Baldwin, James Agate, John Barrymore, Max Beerbohm, John Betjeman, Leonard Cheshire, Noel Coward, Ian Dalrymple, Rumer Godden, Lionel Hale, Lucille Halsey, Aldus Huxley, Margaret Leighton, C.S. Lewis, W. Somerset Maugham, Lawrence Olivier, R.C. Sherriff, H.G. Wells, Edith Sitwell, John Van Druten, Rebecca West, Mary Williams, and many others.   

The collection also includes personal memorabilia and photographs.
