Surface, William (1935-1979)
Scope:
The William Surface collection includes manuscript material, correspondences, printed material, and other material.

Manuscripts in the collection consist of drafts, corrections, and preliminary pages for Surface's book The Hollow (1971).

Correspondence in the collection consists of personal and professional letters, including letters pertaining to research, writing, and publication of The Hollow, as well as letters from book readers to Surface and his replies. The letters range in date from 1968 to 1972.

Printed items include book reviews, magazine and newspaper reviews, and a biographical magazine profile of Surface.

Other items include photographs of Surface in Appalachia; royalty accounts and receipts; publicity material; a map of Harlan County; a proof of a book jacket; and an audio tape recording of an interview of Surface by Bill Dag regarding Appalachia and Surface's books.
