Szep, Paul (1941- )
Scope:
The Paul Szep Collection consists of artwork, printed material, photographs, correspondence, professional material, memorabilia, and scrapbooks.

Artwork consists of hundreds of original drawings of Szep's political cartoons, organized by subject. Subjects include military conflicts, governmental issues, social issues, international issues, and local issues concerning New England. Cartoons about the arts and sports are collected as well, along with Christmas cartoons drawn for Szep's friends. Notable figures in the cartoons include Spiro Agnew, Idi Amin, Corazon Aquino, Yassar Arafat, Hafez Assad, Tony Blair, George Bush Sr., George Bush Jr., Jimmy Carter, Dick Cheney, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, Mikhail Gorbachev, Al Gore, Hubert Humphrey, Saddam Hussein, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Ferdinand Marcos, Richard Nixon, Yitzhak Rabin, Ronald Regan, Margaret Thatcher, and Boris Yeltzin. The collection also includes two original ink portraits of Lyndon B. Johnson by Szep, as well as 13 enlarged frames of political cartoons from assorted publications including The Boston Globe and Sports Illustrated.

Printed material in the collection includes tear sheets of comics, as well as miscellaneous copies of newspapers. Cartoon tear sheets date from 1982-1999. Newspapers with items of interest date from 1968-1999, and include copies of The Boston Globe, Boston Herald Advertiser, Boston Evening Globe, Boston Phoenix, New York Times, Washington Post, and Sun Bulletin. Also included in the collection is printed testimony from the 1982 Edward King v. Boston Globe lawsuit, and an introduction written by Robert Redford for Szep's book The Harder They Fall.

Photographs include black and white and color prints of a young Szep playing hockey, Szep in his office, Szep playing golf, and Szep at an awards ceremony. Also included are pictures of Robert Redford and Nancy Regan.

Correspondence in the collection consists of letters dating from the 1960s to 2000.

Visual material consists of 13 enlarged frames of political cartoons in ink, used for assorted publications including The Boston Globe and Sports Illustrated.

Professional material consists of a National Cartoonist Society card, a stenography pad with notes and drawings, press passes, and public relations material from the United Features Syndicate.

Memorabilia includes a Selective Service Registration card, a calendar with Norman Rockwell paintings, a Brookline Fall Soccer Festival patch, and buttons with various slogans.

Scrapbooks in the collection are filled with mounted cartoons which date from 1969 to 1982.
