Wise, William (1923- )
Scope:
The William Wise collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, professional material, personal memorabilia and other material.

Manuscripts in the collection include novels, children's books, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, and teleplays. Novel manuscripts include The Two Wives of Harvey Boone (unpublished, 1960); The Amazon Factor (1980); and When The Cat's Away (unpublished). Manuscripts of children's books include Christopher: Tale of a Small Traveler (unpublished, 1960); Jason and the Terrible Trumpet (1966); Feast or Famine (1971); Cities Old and New (1973); Monsters of the Deep (1975); Mermaids, Sirens, and Sea-Cows (1973); Monsters of North America (1978); and Monster Myths of Ancient Greece (1981). Manuscripts of short fiction include several short stories published between 1947 and 1986. Non-fiction manuscripts include Massacre at Mountain Meadows: An American Legend and Monumental Crime (1976) and The New Vampires (unfinished). Manuscripts of poetry include the collection Four and Twenty Children (1955-1960) and No Sign of Santa! (1987) among others. Manuscripts of teleplays include Kasrilekva on the Mississippi (co-written with James Yaffe, 1955); The Enemy (co-written with James Yaffe, 1956); and A World Full of Strangers (co-written with James Yaffe, 1958).

Correspondence in the collection consists of both professional and personal letters ranging from 1932 to 2004. Professional correspondence includes hundreds of letters from publishers of Wise's books, dated 1982 to 1992. Notables include Chick Parsons, Peter S. Prescott, Wallace Fowlie, Eleanor Lambert, Elizabeth Arden, Roger Shattuck, James Yaffe, and William C. Devane. Personal correspondence includes letters between Wise's parents, grandparents, and brother Robert (1948-1949, 1958-1959).

Research material includes several articles on global warming with personal commentary by Wise in relation to Killer Smog (1952); and Wise's personal book collection of texts dated from 1815 to 1982, including a wide selection of books used to research Massacre at Mountain Meadows.

Other printed materials include items relating to Christopher Mouse: The Tale of a Small Traveler (2004) including a pre-publication copy, dust jacket illustrations, proof sheets, and a poster-size cover illustration by Patrick Benson.
    
Professional material includes contracts with G.P. Putnam's (1960-1970) and Parent's Magazine Press (1968-1974); copyright renewals (1966-1988); publishers revisions of book rights (1972-1989); royalties (1956-1987) and insurance policies.

Personal memorabilia in the collection consists of a scrapbook from Wise's childhood (1923); a Lincoln School of Teachers College yearbook (1938); army documents, (1943-1946); various membership cards (1962-1988); school pins from Lawrenceville and Yale University, Wise's mother's wedding photographs, as well as other materials.  

Other material includes a DVD for Secret War in the Pacific (2004) and a tape cassette of Ten Sly Piranhas.
