Yarborough, William P. (1912-2005)

The William P. Yarborough collection consists of correspondence, memorabilia, professional material, manuscripts, printed material, photographs, legal material, and financial material.

Correspondence in the collection includes professional and personal correspondence. Professional correspondence dates 1951 to 1979 and includes notable correspondents such as Creighton Abrams, George Ball, Dwight E. Beach, Lucius Beebe, William Bundy, John A. Burns, George Bush, Mark W. Clark, Angier Biddle Duke, Mamie Eisenhower, Henry E. Emerson, Arthur Fieldler, Michael Forrestal, Andrew Goodpaster, Roger Hilsman, J. Edgar Hoover, Henry M. Jackson, Harold Keith Johnson, Robert F. Kennedy, Samuel W. Koster, Edward Lansdale, John S. McCain Jr., Harry C. McPherson Jr., Robin Moore, Romola Nijinsky, Lon Nol, Bruce Palmer Jr., General Williston B. Palmer, Stanley R. Resor, Walt Whitman Rostow, Robert Skimin, William C. Sullivan, Cyrus Leo Sulzberger, Maxwell D. Taylor, John L. Throckmorton, Strom Thurmond, Richard Tregaskis, Cyrus R. Vance, Vernon A. Walters, William Westmoreland, General Robert J. Wood, and Whitney Young, among others. Declassified military messages from Japan, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, and Washington D.C. are also included. Personal correspondents include Yarborough’s wife and children, with correspondence dating 1934 to 1969.

Memorabilia in the collection includes certificates, diplomas, awards, textiles, and other objects. Certificates include academic certificates as well as certificates of commendation. Notable certificates include a Certificate of Achievement from the U.S. Army and a certificate from the Armed Forces Information School with a citation from the White House signed by Harry S. Truman. Diplomas include Yarborough’s high school diploma. Awards and plaques are extensive in the collection, dating throughout Yarborough’s military career (1931-1971). Most notably are his Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star. Textiles include Yarborough’s uniforms; items include fatigue boots, jackets, trousers, shirts, a beret, a belt, and a sash. The series also include identification badges, brass insignias, cigarette lighters, American flags, and a tie clip given to Yarborough by Robert Kennedy.

Professional material in the collection includes subject files, travel itineraries, reports, internal documents, appointment books, and schedules. Subject files consist of extensive military files regarding topics such as “Completed Action” and “intelligence and strategy,” among many others. Travel itineraries include Yarborough’s schedule and instructions for his trips to Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Laos, Mexico, Okinawa, the Philippines, South-East Asia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam between 1966 and 1970. Reports include official reports mentioning Yarborough and reports used by him for informational purposes. Internal documents include authorizations, requests, orders, transfers, as well as a list of Yarborough’s assignments between 1942 and 1964. Date books and calendars are also included.

Manuscripts in the collection include speeches, articles, and poetry. Speeches date from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s include graduation addresses, conference and seminar presentations, ceremonial remark, among other professional events. Articles, poetry, and reviews by Yarborough are included from Yarborough’s time as editor of the West Point Pointer at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Other articles Yarborough’s articles in the magazine Special Warfare.

Printed material in the collection includes newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets, and booklets. Clippings regarding Yarborough date from 1933 to 1975 in publications such as Airborne Quarterly, Armed Forces Journal, and Coronet. Pamphlets are included regarding military planning, infantry training, and field organization. Booklets from various conferences Yarborough attended are also included.

Photographs in the collection date from 1938 to 1965. Photographs include Yarborough throughout his military career; there are prints of him and his infantry, his time in the Special Forces, photographs from trips to Thailand, Iran, and Vietnam, and receiving awards. Also included is a framed photograph of Yarborough with J. Edgar Hoover.

Legal material in the collection consists of several of Yarborough’s passports and driver’s licenses, as well as court transcripts. Court transcripts include Yarborough’s testimony to the Subcommittee on Government Operations in 1968. 

Financial material in the collection includes receipts, tax returns, and other miscellaneous financial information dating 1988 to 1996.
