Horatio Alger Association
Scope:
The Horatio Alger Association collection consists of professional material, printed material, memorabilia, video recordings, photographs, and other material.

Professional material in the collection primarily consists of office files regarding membership publications and various executive boards; they include reports, directories, scholar lists, surveys, and other documents, dating from 1996 to 2010. Also present are bound volumes of meeting minutes (1951-2009) and files regarding John A. Howard and the Freedoms Foundation (2000-2012).

Printed materials in the collection include several publications of the HAA, including The Executive Forum (1988-1993), retitled The Forum (1994-2009, 2011); programs for the Horatio Alger Awards and Induction Ceremony events (2002-2006); and Risen from the Ranks, about the Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship.

In addition, the collection includes files of material on Ebby Halliday (2011) and Carlos J. Arboleya (2010-2011), as well as several items regarding Ebby Halliday's centenary; short biographies of Horatio Alger, Morris L. Hite, and John O. Hershey; items regarding June Schobee Rodgers and W. Clement Stone; and a program for the 25th Anniversary Awards Dinner of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education (2011).

Memorabilia in the collection includes a bust of Horatio Alger with a medal, labeled the Horatio Alger Award; a National Scholar Medallion; a Member Medallion; a W. Clement Stone keychain; a set of Horatio Alger commemorative U.S. postage stamps (1982), with a printed program regarding the first day of issue ceremony; and a White House Christmas ornament (2011).

Videos in the collection mainly consist of digital video disc recordings of the annual Horatio Alger Awards induction ceremonies, dating from 1993 to 2011. Also present are several episodes from series 2 and 3 of "Against the Odds," as well as an oral history recording of John O. Hershey (1997).

Photographs in the collection include several black and white prints of HAA members and award-winners, dating from 1947 to 2010; and four CD-ROMs of digital images regarding Ebby Halliday's 100th birthday (2011).

Other items in the collection include a file of legal material regarding the Horatio Alger Association of Canada (2009); miscellaneous correspondence; and a file of manuscripts, letters, and other documents regarding "The Wine Group" (2000-2012).

Several items in the collection pertain specifically to Jack LaLanne. These include a biographical sketch of LaLanne; photographs of LaLanne, including a CD-ROM with numerous digital images of him; a photo of LaLanne with his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2002), as well as an invitation to the dedication of the star, a name tag for the ceremony, and a pin regarding the star; five posters of LaLanne, signed by him; and other items.
