Poulin, Muriel A.
The Muriel A. Poulin collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, audio, printed material, and other items.

Manuscripts by Poulin in the collection include numerous articles, statements and testimony, addresses and speeches, video and audio scripts, and other writings, all regarding the profession of nursing.  These items date from 1958 to 1988.  Included is Poulin's thesis, "The Case Method in Teaching Administration" (1960).

Correspondence in the collection includes numerous professional letters to and from Poulin, dating from 1942 to 1999.  Topics include publications (1964-1971); the Pan-American Sanitary Bureau, World health Organization, Lima, Peru (1965-1966); the Kellogg Foundation, Bogota , Colombia (1966); Economic and General welfare Program, American Nursing Association, and Academy of Nursing (1969); the U.S. Navy Manpower Study (1972);the International Council of Nurses 15th Quadrennial Congress in Mexico (1973); the Boston University School of Nursing (1974-1977); the the American Academy of Nursing (1975-1978); the American Nursing Association candidate slate and Poulin's campaign for the position of Second Vice President (1975-1978); the Whiting foundation (1978-1980); Poulin's visiting professorship in Caracas, Venezuela (1981); the Massachusetts Nurses Association Task Force on the Nurse Practice Act (1982-1983); the Executive Nurse Leadership Program and the Commonwealth Fund (1983-1985); the School of Nursing, Phillip Institute of Technology, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia (1983-1985); Escola Universitaria D'Infirmeria Santa Madrona (1986-1992); and other subjects.  Also present are letters from various Venezuelan friends and colleagues (1970s), correspondence with US Senate members (1997-1999), and general correspondence.

Photographs in the collection include various prints of Poulin with various others, usually at nursing-related events.  Images include: a Supervisor Meeting with Poulin, and other hospital scenes (1957-1959); a Supervisor's course for Department Heads (1959); Poulin and Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis at Poulin's swearing in as a member of the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women (1976); Poulin with members of the Class of 1974 from the Nursing Administration Program (1974); international students with Muriel Poulin, Virginia Arnold, and Catherine Tinkham; Poulin and others from the Boston University school of Nursing at Fisk House; Poulin and Nancy Kehrli at Boston University Commencement (1976); Poulin and Anne Zimmerman, official ANA delegates to the International Council of Nurses Congress in Tokyo, Japan (1977); Poulin and others at the International Conference of Nurses (1981); Poulin in Caracas, Venezuela, receiving the key to the city; and  Poulin with Mary E. Miller, founder of Sigma Theta Tau, at a Sigma Theta Tau reception, held at the Nursing Archives, Boston University, Mugar Memorial Library (1983).
Memorabilia includes Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing Yearbook (1946); a diary (1954-1955); a scrapbook documenting Poulin's campaign for ANA office: Elect Muriel Poulin to Second Vice President of ANA (1976);  books presented to  Poulin by the Mayor of Caracas (1977); and a gift bag received by Poulin during a trip to Tokyo, Japan. Certificates, honors, and awards include a Medical Education for Atomic Defense certificate issued by the Medical Society for the District of Columbia (1950); an Appointment Certificate issued to Poulin by the U.S. Public Health Service Reserve Corps, conferring upon her the rank of Nurse Officer (1955); Ministerio de Salud Publica y Asistericia Social: Participation in Work Conference for Administration de Servicios Interredos de Enfermieria (1965); Arthur G.B. Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, Boston University (1976); Simon Bolivar Medal, Caracas, Venezuela (equivalent to the key to the city) (1981); Certificate for Red Cross Appreciation (1994); and the Massachusetts Nurses Association Distinguished Service Plaque.

Audio material in the collection includes an open reel tape labeled "Muriel's Party at the End of First Year at Teachers College" (1969); an audio cassette of JoAnn Ashley of the Massachusetts Nurses Association (1977); and a "Conversation with Margaret McClure, Muriel Poulin, Martha Schneider, Debra Janikowski, and Seth Kahan," on two discs (2007).    

Printed material includes a number of articles by Poulin, appearing in a variety of professional medical or nursing journals, as well as reports, programs from events, and brochures.  These date from 1951 to 1988.

Other material in the collection includes: CD-ROMs regarding the Tenth National Magnate Conference, held in Denver, CO (2006) and the Eleventh National Magnate Conference, held in Atlanta, GA (2007); also a "Highlights Reel" CD-ROM from the same conference (2007); and a number of subject files.  These files contain printed material, correspondence, photographs and notes.  Topics include: American Academy of Nursing; Boston University School of Nursing Executive Leadership Program; Costa Rica-2nd Consultation; Nursing archives material; reports from Damascus, 1954; Spain; the WHO; the Syrian Hospital Project; and others.
