Shetland, Margaret (1906-2006)
The Margaret L. Shetland collection includes manuscripts, professional material, photographs, printed material, and correspondence.

Manuscripts in the collection include drafts of papers presented by Shetland at various nursing association meetings and university convocations, both in the Unites States and abroad (American University of Beirut, Lebanon; World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland).  These writings, dated 1965-1973, deal primarily with Shepherd's thoughts on the absolute importance of graduate education for nurses and the accompanying responsibility to continue to look to the future of the profession.  There are also reports generated through in-service education workshops (1947-1954) and public health conference reports (1951-1963). Also present are drafts of speeches and articles by Shetland (1951-1978) as well as her Doctoral Thesis, presented at Teachers College, Columbia University, "A Method for Exploring Bases of Curriculum Development" (1953).

Professional material in the collection consists of numerous office files compiled by Shetland.  Topics include: her participation in workshops (1940-1967); professional memberships and activities (1950-1980), including the National League for Nursing (1963-1973); a "Proposal for a Basic Nursing Program in the University of the State of New York" (1964); consultation projects in the U.S. (1964-1969); consultation projects in other countries, including the Philippines (1954-1968), Lebanon (1967), Turkey, Central Treaty Organization (1967-1972), Panama (1968), Venezuela (1969), Guatemala (1970), Canada (1972- 1978), and Australia/New Zealand (1975-1977); a "Proposal for a Master's Program in the University of the State of New York System" (1977); and an NLN report on Nursing Requirements and Resources in New York State (1978-1980).
