Palmer, Irene S. (1923- )
The Irene S. Palmer collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, printed material, and a scrapbook.
Manuscripts in the collection include: drafts of speeches and reports by Palmer, for and about the Boston University School of Nursing (ca. 1967-1982, several undated). Also present is a manuscript by Charlotta Januska, Yale School of Nursing, "Privileged Communication – Reviewers Comments on Nursing Special Project Grant, Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner Training."
Correspondence in the collection includes: letters from Palmer to a variety of politicians related to legislation affecting nursing (1968-1974) and responses to her letters (1968-1974), including Edward W. Brooke III, John Conte, Silvio O. Conte, Louise Day Hicks, Margaret Heckler, Thomas P. O'Neill, Edward M. Kennedy, Robert Drinan, Elliot Richardson, John Joseph Moakley, Gerry Studds, and others. Correspondence to others includes letters to Mary Ann Garrigan, Boston University School of Nursing; Ruth Sleeper, President of the NLN; Anne Kilbrick, Dean of the Boston University School of Nursing; a letter to Irene S. Palmer from Stella Goostray, congratulating her on her appointment as Dean of Boston University School of Nursing; Calvin B.T. Lee, acting President of Boston University; and Clark Kerr, Carnegie Commission. Correspondence related to creating a national nursing archive includes letters from: Margaret G. Arnstein, Yale University School of Nursing; Rena Boyle, University of Nebraska, Omaha (1971); Laura C. Dustan, University of Iowa, Iowa City; Eileen M. Jacobi, ANA, New York; Eleanor C. Lambertsen, Cornell University; Madeleine Leininger, University of Washington, Seattle; Dorothy A. Mereness, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and Rozella M. Schlotfeldt, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. Also present are copies of letters from Irene S. Palmer to Boston University President John R. Silber, Richard Egdahl, Sidney Burrel, Hand Estin, and Marie Farrell, regarding the Boston University School of Nursing. Additional correspondence includes letters from Mary T. McDonough, Ann Kilbrick, and others.
Photographs in the collection include several photographs of Palmer with various other individuals, including Mary K. Karl, Dr. Mary Conway, Mildred C. Makin, Ethel Brooks, Dr. Virginia Arnold, Linda Amos, Dr. Evelyn Elwood, and Dr. Sylvia Bruce.
Printed material in the collection includes articles about Palmer from various publications, including BU Currents, Boston University School of Nursing Alumnae News, Nursing Research, Image, and American Association of College and Nursing Publication Series. These items date from 1969 to 1983.
The scrapbook, "Toward a National Nursing Archive," contains 39 letters recommending that Boston University become a national repository for a Nursing Archive Historical Collection, presented to the Department of Special Collections Nursing Archive by Dean Irene S. Palmer (1972).
