The Sophie C. Nelson collection consists of manuscripts, printed material, and memorabilia.

Manuscripts collection include: "Public Health Nursing as Related to the United States Public Health Service: An Opinion," by Nelson (1932); "Budget Summary Sheets: Statement of Visiting Nursing Expense and Cost Per Visit and Procedure for Costs Statement Analysis" (1946); "Program Methods of Support – Budgeting and Costing Methods," by Nelson; and "Formula for Computing Cost of Part-Time Nursing Service to Industry."

Printed material in the collection includes some published writings by Nelson, including: "Cost of Nursing Service," by Nelson and Mary Louise K. Hall, Public Health Nursing (1939); "Visiting Nurse Service," The Patriot, a John Hancock Insurance Co. house organ (1947); and "A Quarter Century of Health Service," The Patriot (1950).  Other printed items include: various reports and other publications by the National Organization for Public Health Nursing (1924-1952); "History of the Graduates of the Waltham Training School for Nurses" (1937), which mentions Nelson; "Call for Health," a story about Nelson, Home Office News, a John Hancock Insurance Co. house organ (1950); "Sophie Nelson Honored by the International Red Cross," Home Office News (1951); articles by various authors published in Public Health Nursing (1948-1953); "Statistical Reporting and Costs in Public Health Nursing," published by the National League for Nursing, Department of Public Health Nursing (1953); and other items.

Memorabilia in the collection consists of various medals presented to Nelson.  These include the Lemuel Shattuck Medal from the Massachusetts Public Health Association; the Florence Nightingale Memorial Medal from the Red Cross; a medal from the Hungarian Executive Committee; a medal from the Greek Red Cross; an American Red Cross Foreign Service medal; and several French medals.  Also present is a photograph documenting the medals.
