Le Sacre Du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)
Igor Stravinsky's ballet Le Sacre Du Printemps premiered in Paris at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees. Produced by the Ballets Russes impresario Serge Diaghilev, with a mis-en-scene by Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky; choreography by Nijinsky. The opening night audience was not pleased by Stravinsky's dissonant percussive score and a riot broke out in the theatre.
Shown with the published 1914 score are representations of a portrait of Stravinsky by Pablo Picasso, who was engaged as a set/costume designer for the Ballets Russes that season; a rendering of part of Nicolas Roerich's set design for the 1913 production; and a drawing of ballerina Marie Piltz performing the "Sacrificial Dance" segment of the ballet dated "Paris, 29 Mai 1913."
