Jacques Pepin: A Life in Food and in Art

This exhibition features material from award-winning chef, author, and well-known television personality, Jacques Pepin, a recent member of the family of collectees at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center. The exhibition includes a wide range of material beginning with an early photograph of Jacques in service to the French Navy - as a chef, of course. There are also early photographs of Jacques and his wife, Gloria, including one taken at their intimate wedding held outdoors at the home of New York Times food writer, Craig Claiborne. There are also early photos of the couple with their young daughter, Claudine. The exhibition also features hand-corrected manuscript pages from Pepin's autobiography, The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen. There are also pages of hand-written recipes and drafts of articles written while Pepin was a contributing food writer for the New York Times; and tearsheets from an article for Food and Wine magazine on a trip to Senegal.

There are a number of awards, including medals from the James Beard Foundation, Les Maitres-Conseils en Gastronomie Francaise, the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, and the American Culinary Federation, to name but as few. There is a letter from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, thanking Pepin for a dinner prepared for President Obama in New York City, shown along with Pepin's hand-lettered and decorated menu created for the event: a traditional Pepin item, one of several in the exhibition and one of many in the collection. There is a letter from First Lady Michelle Obama, thanking Pepin for his participation in a White House Easter Egg Roll, a holiday card signed by the entire Obama family (including Bo, the dog); and a large-format White House photograph of the Obama family with Jacques, his daughter Claudine, and her daughter, Shorey. The exhibition continues with a lovely selection of correspondence to Pepin from fellow-chef and collaborator, Julia Child, along with a series of photographs of the two of them in action and a copy of their book, Julia and Jacques: Cooking at Home. There is a set of note cards featuring reproductions of some of Jacques' paintings, along with an announcement card for an exhibition of his paintings at the New Britain Museum of American Art. The exhibition concludes with a copy of Mr. Pepin's most recent book, New Complete Techniques, published in 2012.

Located in on the first floor of Mugar Memorial Library. The Exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours.
