Support The Center

The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center has been a cultural beacon for the Boston University community and the City of Boston for over fifty years. As a cultural presenter, the Gotlieb Center offers a wide range of programs, events, exhibitions, and collaborations promoting the arts and humanities. The financial support of donors is vital to the Gotlieb Center's endeavors: preservation, presentation, exhibition, and outreach. Without your generous support, much of what we do would not be possible.

No matter how you choose to give, your generosity is appreciated, and you get to take part in capturing history.

Membership Organizations

One of the main ways you can support the Center is by joining one of our membership organizations.

Be Our Guest. Be A Friend.

Become a Friend of the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University. Membership includes a pass to our full season of events, including our Speaker Series, exhibition openings, cocktail receptions and other special events. Speakers, many of whose papers are a part of the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, are some of the most notable and distinguished achievers in their fields. Events provide them the opportunity to discuss their personal triumphs, private anecdotes and early careers, and answer questions from the audience. Speakers have included journalists David Halberstam and Jonathan Alter, theater critic John Lahr, biographers Brian Kellow and Patricia Bosworth, performers Ben Vereen & Grace Bumbry, playwright Craig Lucas, actors Leonard Nimoy, BD Wong and Alan Cumming, actresses Angela Lansbury, Geena Davis and Mary-Louise Parker, and writers Robert B. Parker, Sue Grafton and Richard North Patterson. The setting is relaxed and events are an excellent place not only to meet the celebrity guest, but to catch up with old friends and network to make new ones.

Nursing Archives Associates

We are seeking members to share with us the responsibility of preserving the history of the nursing profession. This significant work is largely sustained through membership contributions.

The History of Nursing Archives at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University is a leader in the preservation of Nursing History. Established in 1966, with help from a United States Public Health Service grant and the financial support of the Boston University School of Nursing, we hold the personal and professional papers of nursing leaders, records of several schools of nursing, public health and professional nursing organizations, histories of various American and foreign schools of nursing, including early textbooks; as well as a very extensive book collection. These manuscripts and books that document the evolution of the profession and its contribution to the fields of public health, women's rights, and military history.

Past support from the Nursing Archives Associates has enabled the History of Nursing Archives to catalog, preserve, and make materials accessible to researchers and scholars, as well as to produce exhibitions, oral histories and publications. Each year, at our Annual Meeting, we present a speaker and host a reception for all members of the Nursing Archives Associates.

The Florence Nightingale Digitization Project

The Project began in 2014 as a collaborative effort to create a comprehensive, publicly accessible database of digitized correspondence written by Florence Nightingale.  Original partners in the Project were the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, the Florence Nightingale Museum in London, The Royal College of Nursing, and the Wellcome Library in London.  Additional organizations have joined, and the collaborative now has 20 national and international partners.  The database currently contains over 2,300 items and is accessible to the public through a portal hosted by Boston University, which allows users to view the digital images of the correspondence authored by Florence Nightingale, and which links to the partners' websites.

The project would not have been possible without the support of the Nursing Archives Associates.  Please visit the site and explore the rich legacy of Florence Nightingale, in her own words.
