The Discipline of Commitment
Date:
May 7, 1978
Description:
May 7, 1978. Tt Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Running time: 27:14. Thurman starts this talk with his common refrain that the key element of life is that it is "alive." It has a dynamic, pulsing quality to it. This dynamism ought to compel us to strive for a goal or purpose in life. This, he says, is the heart of commitment: a deep, inner assent of the person, self, and aspirations. He then proceeds to wrestle with the spiritual problems inherent in commitment, chief of all, making an idol of commitment itself. As important as commitment is, we must not elevate it above God.
