Thurman beings in a hurry in order to prepare for a funeral. He mentions topics and readings relating to death before reading extensively from Man's Concerns with Death by Toynebee. Thurman notes that Christan mystics and some eastern practitioners, the self is the enemy of the individual. He discusses at length how eastern and western mystic views on the self. The teachings of God and Jesus can lift us beyond the self by by making more room inside us for God.
